A particular set of personality characteristics does not turn a person into a criminal. However, criminals may have the same set of characteristics. This concept may not be easy to understand. Here is another example: all college graduates have attended college, but not everyone who attended college is a college graduate. The mistake that “if A then B” is the same as “if B then A” is a common one in research, criminal investigation, and profiling.

Criminal profiling is a difficult task. Complete the following three parts and present them in your report.

Part I

Identify at least five offense characteristics of each of the following crimes: sex offense, murder, acquisitive crime, organized crime, and terrorism.

Part II

Choose two offenses for those listed in Part I. Using the selected characteristics, complete the following for each of the two offenses you selected:

  • Analyze the selected characteristics to develop a forensic profile for that particular type of offense. For example, how would you use the two offense characteristics you have selected for murder to develop inferences regarding the personality of a murderer?
  • Explain how an offender’s level of cognitive and emotional functioning, as well as social and environmental factors, could contribute to his or her maladaptive behavior in each of the above offenses.
  • Identify and justify the types of tests and/or personality measures that might be used to gather additional information for each of the two offenses.
  • Identify and justify the type of collateral information you would need to learn about the offender in the case of each of the two crimes.

Part III

  • Identify the differences between ethical standards in a criminal investigation and ethical standards in a psychological interview.
  • Offer your recommendations for future research needed to advance the science and research of psychological profiling techniques.
  • Discuss the different ethical considerations one must follow as an investigator and as a psychologist.

Support your responses giving reasons and examples from eight to ten scholarly resources.

Write a 7- to 9-page report in a Microsoft Word document. Apply APA standards to cite sources.

Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

The definition of psychology is the study of behavior and mental processes. As humans we are continually engaging in behaviors and our brains are always processing information. Reflect on your own life. Prior to studying psychological principles, consider some of the following:

  • How do you innately use psychology in your everyday life?
  • How is it used in the workplace? In hospital settings?
  • In school settings? In families, relationships, and raising children?
  • In the design of homes, offices, playgrounds, schools?

Requirements

Students must write all responses using their own thoughts and words. If one uses a theory or information from Internet websites or other resources to support their thoughts, position, or opinion that information must be cited using APA format and a bibliography. Please note that the purpose of the assignment is to discuss one’s own thoughts about a topic, so, use of resources is not encouraged. If resources are used, they must be used minimally (one or two citations maximum no more than two sentences or phrases) This type of information should be used to support one’s position or opinion only. Please note: cutting and pasting from the internet, use of another author’s thoughts and/or words from any resource without citation in the response and a bibliography, using sentences such as “Scientists/Researchers say that…” or “According to current research” (without citing who the scientists are…what the research is…and not citing them/it) is considered plagiarism. The third essay is your portfolio analysis essay. Please write a concise essay of approximately 400 words (your essay may exceed 400 words–it may be as long as you need it to be as long as it is approximately 400 words) in which you argue for why you think you have successfully met the WST requirement as demonstrated by your work in this class. This is a thesis driven essay, and you want to use your own development as a writer in the class as your evidence of what you learned, e.g., noting grades does not explain how you developed as a writer. You want to give specific examples of how you developed, including what you learned, as a writer. I am not allowed to give you feedback on this essay, but I can answer general questions you have while you are working on it.

Review your work in our class this quarter (not just the essay work) and note places you have developed as a writer; this information will help you as you compose your portfolio analysis essay. Your essay should focus on how your work in our class prepared you to fulfill the WST and, how when your work is considered in its totality, demonstrates how you have fulfilled WST requirement.

It should go without saying, but you may not use (recycle) and essay you have written for a previous class including English 3000, 3001, and 3003 if you are retaking English 3003. Any previous writing you have done in other classes will not explain what you have learned in our class. The Battle of Maldon

“The Battle of Maldon” illustrates better than almost any other poem from the Anglo-Saxon period the Germanic comitatus in action. The primary virtues are loyalty, bravery, and obedience to a lord, along with the willingness to die for him even after the battle is lost. Although the English lose the battle, the poem shows them winning a moral victory. Except for a few who lose their courage and run away, most of the warriors remain loyal to their lord even after he has fallen. Many die trying to avenge him. There are few better illustrations of the Germanic ideal of warrior behavior. Indeed, the most famous lines of the poem focus on the courage of the warrior in the face of inevitable defeat and death: “Thought must be the harder, heart the keener/ Spirit shall be more–as our might lessens.”

After the battle of Brunanburh (937) the English and the Vikings fought over the kingdom of York, which changed hands several times. But after 954, twenty-six years of peace between the English and the Vikings passed. When the Vikings returned to invade England again in the 980s, they were more numerous and better organized. Olaf Tryggvason, a famous Norwegian Viking, attacked Kent and then sailed north to East Anglia, where he encountered a resolute ealdorman, Byrhtnoth, at Maldon. The battle between them took place in 991, when King Ethelred was on the English throne. The Viking invaders could have easily by-passed Maldon and carried on their raid elsewhere with the same effect. We would have lost, though, one of the finest pieces of Old English poetry, which seems to have been written by an eyewitness.

Colonialism is the act in which one nation gains control over another nation and maintains its presence there. There are two types of colonialism. One is settler colonialism where an immigrant nation takes over foreign land and the indigenous people are wiped out. The other type of colonialism is called elite colonialism where the indigenous rulers are replaced with European ones however the indigenous population remains intact. As the British began to cross over to America, they used the settler colonialism type on the people that had currently lived there. When they began to settle along the east coast in places such as Jamestown, Maryland, and Massachusetts, the native people were pushed back towards the west coast. The British were more technologically advanced in warfare and this was no problem for them. As the natives were pushed back, they began to encroach on other tribes land and caused even more warfare, eventually leading to the rapid decline of the native population. Another con to the settling of the British in America was that they brought over new diseases foreign to the land and peoples that were already there. These diseases took a toll on the indigenous people as well as the crops that were grown during this time. As soon as precious metals were discovered here, the British as well as other ountries wanted to claim land in America to extract the gold, silver, etc. This caused even more immigrants to the area and contributed to the decline of the native people as well. Basically, the greed and want of more power caused almost a whole population of people to become extinct. The country would be a completely different place if the British never wanted to expand their territory and rule beyond their borders into America.

The British Empire also expanded their power in Africa as well once France and Germany began to “reap the benefits” in this area. They brought over diseases that made the people here sick and die. They exported the crops that were grown here tenfold in exchange for other goods from other countries and better their home in Britain. They seized as much land here as they could for fear of being left behind since France and Germany was already on the move in this area. The discovery and gold and diamonds in Africa did not help the native people keep their country for themselves. Many immigrants came over to gain access to these precious metals as they did in America. Another con to the British coming over into Africa was the use of slaves, which they saw as a good that could be traded. They used the indigenous population to grow their crops and basically do the manual labor they did not want to do. They transported these slaves on boats, packed them tight like fish. This in turn caused disease outbreak and many did not make the trip. One could say this was probably better for them than working a life of slavery where you were not appreciated for the work you did. The British however did not care if they made it, they just went back for more. It is digusting to think that the human race can look at another race and see a commodity in them that can be traded.

In short I think colonialism, whether it was settler or elite, was a negative thing to the world back then. It set up negative feelings towards those countries that sought to expand their territories by taking other peoples’ land in the way that they did. It almost wiped out certain populations that are crucial to our world today. Everyone brings something to the table and pushing them away or giving them a life in which they basically could not think for themselves caused riffs between the nations that could have been avoided.
