developed country

  • Choose a developed country and discuss how its model of health care (e.g., national health insurance, national health system, or socialized health insurance) differs from that of the United States.
  • Discuss some of the strengthens and weaknesses of that model in comparison to what is offered in the United States.

PART 2 (500 WORDS AND 1 SCHOLARLY REFERENCE)

Public and private health insurance plays a very significant role in the delivery and funding or reimbursement of health care services, making it very important that all health care professionals understand, at a minimum, the basics of health insurance. For this assignment, you are required to discuss the following:

  • Provide a definition of both private and public health insurance, and discuss the differences between private and public health insurance.
  • Choose 1 public health insurance program (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, or Children’s Health Insurance Program), and discuss the basics of that program and the financial impact it has had on health care delivery in the United States.

PART 3 (500 WORDS AND 1 SCHOLARLY REFERENCE)

Technology in health care has made it possible for patients to use devices to access their medical information, monitor vital signs, take tests at home, and carry out a plethora of other tasks that could only previously be conducted inside the doctor’s office (Topol, 2013). This enhanced technology is one of the many reasons that there has been a shift from inpatient to outpatient care. Although patients have benefited greatly from health care technology, there are also downsides to technology, such as how it has affected the cost of care. For this Discussion Board assignment, you should complete the following:

  • Provide a definition of outpatient care.
  • Discuss 2–3 ways in which technological innovations have impacted, or will impact, the delivery of care in the United States.
  • Discuss 2–3 ways in which technology has had, or is expected to have, a detrimental impact on the delivery of care.

PART 4 (500 WORDS AND 1 SCHOLARLY REFERENCE)

In most other countries in the world, government plays a central role in covering health care needs; however, in the United States, the private sector (in the form of employer-sponsored health insurance) serves as the dominant form of medical coverage. For this assignment, discuss the following:

  • Describe and discuss some of the ethical concerns or problems that exist because of the dominant form of employer-sponsored health insurance.
  • Discuss reform actions that the U.S. government has taken to reduce the ethical concerns or problems that you discussed.
  • Define the ethical principle of justice, and discuss its role in the U.S. health care system.

healthcare professional,

As a healthcare professional, you will be a part of an Interdisciplinary team. That team will communicate together about the patient from different points of view in order to provide the best treatment plan.

Automated Pharmacy

Automated Pharmacy Case Study

As the director of pharmacy for CMC, you have been experiencing an increase in drug cost of approximately eight to ten percent per year for the past three years. The annual pharmacy drug cost has increased from $10,300,000 to $16,800,000 in the past five years. The hospital is experiencing an increase in drug cost even though actual drug usage has remained stable.

Along with the increase in drug cost, drug related errors have also increased. Patient safety has become an even more serious issue. As you know, patient safety is the number one item on the national health care agenda for the next several years.

At the hospital the number of dispensing errors has increased by two percent during the past twelve months. The registered nurses who are administering the drugs have discovered many of the dispensing errors; however, the ones not discovered resulted in patients getting the wrong drug, wrong dosage, and/or the wrong frequency. When the overall drug error rate was analyzed, it was found that dispensing errors in the pharmacy were the number one cause. The overall drug error rate had increased from three percent to five percent.

Fortunately most of the dispensing errors were discovered before the medications were administered to the patients. When the incorrect drugs were administered, it resulted in adverse effects in three cases. One patient received the right medication but the wrong dosage because the medication label was incorrect. This patient had to be admitted overnight to the Intensive Care Unit for intense cardiac and respiratory monitoring. The patient stayed in ICU for approximately twenty four hours. Another patient received the wrong medication on the day of planned discharge and had to remain in the hospital for an additional day, though only for observation. In the third case, the patient had reported that he was allergic to a certain category of drugs, but nonetheless received a drug of that type. He had an adverse reaction–a rash–which delayed his discharge by one day.

On the basis of your understanding of the above case study, express your views on the following:

  • What measures should be adopted to reduce the overall drug error rate in the hospital?
  • What special benefits should be given to the patients who have suffered due to negligence by the hospital staff for wrong drug administration and other reasons?
  • In your opinion, should the hospital staff who were responsible for the dispensing errors be held personally liable for the errors? Why or why not?
