Week 10 Discussion On Being Sane in Insane Places, Psychology homework help

On Being Sane in Insane Places

One of the more controversial articles published about mental hospitals is David Rosenhan’s “On Being Sane in Insane Places.” This account describes how 8 sane people gained admission to 12 different mental hospitals by complaining to the admissions office that they had been hearing voices that said, “Empty, hollow, and thud.’ The pseudo-patients behaved normally during the rest of the admission interview and throughout their hospitalization. Although all of them were eventually released from the mental hospitals, with the length of the hospitalization ranging from 7 to 52 days, all were released with the stigmatizing label “schizophrenia in remission.”

The most shocking aspect of the study concerns the experiences the pseudo-patients had while in the mental hospitals. In brief, they received almost no attention from the doctors, nurses, or even attendants, and they were sedated with over 2,000 pills (which they flushed down the toilets, as did many real patients). The few interactions they had with the staff were usually antitherapeutic. For example, Rosenhan describes how doctors ignored patients, as in the following exchange:

Pseudo-patient: Pardon me, Dr. X. Could you tell me when I am eligible for grounds privileges?

Physician: Good morning, Brett. How are you today? (Moves off without waiting for a response.)

In summing up the study, Rosenhan noted that the pseudo-patients experienced very strong feelings of powerlessness and depersonalization, leading to the conclusion that many mental hospitals are actually detrimental to the patients’ mental health. The flaws of the mental hospitals described in Rosenhan’s article are not unavoidable, as evidenced by the hospital system described by Polak, Deever, and Kirby (1977). For example, in a southwest Denver inpatient hospital alternative system, clients are diagnosed at home rather than in the hospital. Staff offices have been eliminated, leading to greatly increased patient-staff interaction. To avoid depersonalization, patients are often placed and treated in the homes of carefully screened families rather than in a large, impersonal hospital. Also, the daily cost of such treatment is considerably less than the standard rate in hospitals. All of this indicates that it is possible to develop a workable, cost-efficient alternative to psychiatric hospitals.

What other ways can you think of where mental health systems can work to humanize, empower, and personalize their care for patients who have mental illness or disorders? Why do you think that it is important to validate rather than ignore those who seek treatment for mental health issues and disorders?

Final Project Milestone Two: Sources and Thesis Exploration/Proposal

Please read the full description before starting assignment!

I need someone to write a 1 paragraph proposal on the trickster archetype in mythology. The proposal should cover the give an overview of the the tricksters role in mythology and whether there are good and bad tricksters. This will be the basis for my final project (please see rubric for more details).

Overview: For this milestone, you will submit some preliminary sources (MLA format) and a topic proposal for your presentation to be reviewed for feasibility and validity by your instructor. This topic is not set in stone and can be adjusted as you work on your project. Below is an example posted by my professor on dying/resurrecting deity:

Specifically the following critical elements must be addressed: – Your topic proposal should be at least one paragraph, with the inclusion of a conditional thesis. Below is an example posted by my professor on dying/resurrecting deity:

“In the project, I will discuss the myths of Inanna and Osiris, both earlier examples of the dying and resurrecting deity. I will show how they are alike—both die and come back to life—and will also discuss how their myths are different. Inanna’s myth is closely related to the seasons, but Osiris’ myth is not related to the seasons. It does, though give hope to his followers that they, too, can live in Tuat, land of the dead. Inanna returns to the upper world when she is resurrected, but Osiris must stay in the land of the dead. This myth is very widespread and is found in almost all mythoi.”

– You should submit at least two sources: a primary and a secondary source. Explain why each source is important and why it relates to your chosen topic. (This can be 1–2 sentences). You will need to give a detailed reason why each source relates to the topic of tricksters.

Notes from my professor regarding sources:

Primary sources are the original works, i.e. The Enuma Elish, the Egyptian Book of Coming Forth by Day (aka The Book of the Dead,)The Iliad, Hesiod’s “Theogony,” The Popol Vuh, and The Mabinogion (Welsh) to name a few. Do not use encyclopedias, websites, or dictionaries that summarize the myths!

Secondary sources are works written about the primary sources, i.e. commentary, analysis, etc. An example of this is Joseph’s Campbell’s work on the hero motif.

If you need further clarification, visit this site: Primary vs. Secondary Sources

I also urge you to use the Shapiro Library which can be accessed in the module.

Wikipedia and about.com are not acceptable, academic sources for college works. Also, keep in mind that sites such as Crystalinks (which catalogs myths) are also not academic, nor are personal websites published by people who are not experts in the field. Such sites as Sparks Notes, abstracts, or summaries of longer articles are also not acceptable. Encyclopedias are not college fodder, nor are dictionaries. Scholarly articles can be found via databases such as EBSCO and JSTOR, BUT make sure that the articles are full text and not abstracts. If you have questions about whether a site is reputable or not, ask me!

And some possibly helpful websites:

If you are looking for online sources, I am posting a couple of sites that might help you! Keep in mind, though, that these texts are in public domain, so the language might be a bit archaic. For example, E.A. Wallis Budge was the foremost Egyptian scholar for years, but his work was completed in in the late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries. Theories might have changed since Budge’s time, but the gist of the myths remain the same. These sites contain a lot of primary sources, but I am not sure how many secondary sources would be available.

Sacred Texts

Ancient Texts

Keep in mind that your works cited sources can (and should be) works in progress. You can continue to find sources until the project is due. I listed some print sources in the discussion area–as have some students–so peruse that list. I will add to it as more “things” come to mind AND I invite you to add your input.

KEEP IN MIND: Wikipedia, about.com, Shmoop, encyclopedias, and dictionaries can be launching points to find other sources, but they are not suitable for college works. Neither are most personal sites (or sites such as Crystalinks), and pages that have several paragraphs are not in depth sources. They will not count in the number of required sources. The project needs to have accurate and reputable sources.

And last: when explaining why the source is important and how it is related to the topic, it is not enough to write, “This article is about the dying and resurrecting deity.” How does the source support your thesis? This is especially important for secondary sources.

Practice Peer Review

Do not begin this discussion until you have thoroughly reviewed all areas and resources in Unit 5. In this discussion, you will post a rough draft of your Explanatory Essay for your peers to review. You will also write a brief explanation of your writing process for your classmates. You will then review the papers of at least two of your classmates.

To complete your posts, follow these steps very carefully and thoroughly:

  1. Carefully review all areas of Unit 5.
  2. Compose your Explanatory Essay draft in full APA format, with your two required sources cited in text and in a References page at the end.

    • Your Explanatory Essay should explain your topic using rich information from your two sources and from your own understanding of the topic. Integrate quoted and paraphrased information from both sources (your choice from the List of Approved Articles for Writing and your scholarly, peer-reviewed library article) throughout your essay. Incorporate source materials smoothly into your paragraphs, and fully cite the articles in text and in a reference page at the end of your essay.
      • For instructions and examples related to in-text citation and end referencing of articles from your book and from the library, please refer to the Explanatory Essay Sample resource. CAREER COUNSELING THEORY CASE STUDY

Career Counseling Theory Case Study

For this assignment, you will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of career counseling theory by choosing a career counseling theory addressed in Units 1 or 2 and applying it to the case study provided below. Approach the case study from the perspective of your individual specialization (mental health counseling, school counseling, and so forth). You can embellish the case scenario as needed to help you complete the assignment.

Scenario

Taneka, a 17-year-old African-American female, is a high school junior. She is the eldest of three siblings living with her single-parent mother. Her mother has worked for the past 15 years at a manufacturing plant. Her father has not been a part of Taneka’s life.

As the eldest, Taneka has held major responsibilities throughout her life to support her working mother, such as caring for her younger siblings: Derrick, now age 14, and Kenya, age 12. These early duties reinforced development of her natural leadership skills. Taneka has been recognized from an early age for being mature, responsible, and dependable. As her siblings have grown, she has been able to have part-time jobs, most recently as a salesperson at a teen fashion store in the local mall. It was here that she first realized she had a knack for dealing with people, and they responded well to her—employers, co-workers, and customers alike. She was recently approached by her supervisor to consider participating in the company’s employee leadership training program.

This has caused Taneka to start thinking about post-secondary educational possibilities. Previously she had thought college was out of her reach, due to the limited financial resources of her family and no history of anyone in her family ever attending college. As such, she had not previously given much importance to her grades. Rather than participating in extracurricular school activities, she focused on working. She is on track for graduating with her class next year and has a current grade point average of 2.05.

Taneka is now questioning her previous assumption about college or other post-secondary educational possibilities, but she does not have a clear idea of what she would like to pursue as a career. Choosing a career and a post-secondary program to prepare for it, seeking financial support, and navigating the admissions procedure all remain mysteries to her.

In your paper, address the following:

  • Argue for one relevant theory to be applied to the scenario. Note: Appropriate career counseling theories include, but are not limited to, Holland, Super, Krumboltz, Gottfredson, Social Cognitive Theory, and Person-Environment-Fit.
  • Identify the theory you chose and provide a rationale as to why you have selected this career theory.
  • Describe the key components of your chosen career counseling theoretical framework.
  • Analyze any challenges you might have applying this theory to the case.
  • Propose possible approaches for addressing the challenges you identified.
  • Be sure to include research findings that support your use of this theory. Include a minimum of one supporting reference not provided in this course.

Your assignment should be 4–5 pages in length and include at least three references, including your text. Be sure to indicate your specialization in your paper. Review the Career Counseling Theory Case Study Scoring Guide to understand the grading expectations for this assignment.
